One of the East Side’s favorite transit traditions is the
Cardboard Boat Race, which occurs every summer in New Richmond. Made from
cardboard, duct tape, and paint, canoe-sized boats are crafted with intricate
detail before being paddled down the Ohio River in a contest of speed and
skill. Awards are handed out for the most creative boat, fastest speed, and everyone's favorite: most
dramatic sinking.
