YEAR ONE: STREETCAR CONSTRUCTION

This week marks the first anniversary of construction beginning on the Cincinnati Streetcar route as the City signed a contract with Messer/Prus/Delta Railroad Joint Venture (MPD) to complete the work. We've been documenting the development of infrastructure once a month since it began. Compare the pictures below to see how the project has evolved over the past year.

WOMEN WEDNESDAY: THE LADIES OF CINCINNATI STREETCAR

In honor of Women's History Month, CincyWhimsy is highlighting some of the fascinating stories about Cincinnati ladies in a series, Women Wednesday. For National Women in Construction Week, we're featuring some of the ladies who are working on the Cincinnati Streetcar project.

Delores Williams (Prus Cement Finisher), and Vercinia Warren (Messer Carpenter)

From design conception and engineering management to the daily construction work taking place along the streets of Over-the-Rhine and Downtown, these four women have been involved in the project every step of the way.

The focus of Women In Construction Week is to highlight construction as a viable career choice for women and to show that females are a visible component of the industry. Women comprise up to 12% of the construction workforce from owners, project managers, engineers, craftspeople, general contractors, subcontractors, administrative personnel, attorneys, insurers and lenders. Local Women In Construction chapters are celebrating the week through community service projects, jobsite tours, membership drives, student activities, hands-on workshops, fundraisers and outreach programs. STREETCAR STROLL: NOVEMBER

Once a month, Noel Prows organizes a group to walk the route of the Cincinnati Streetcar to view and document the development of light rail in the Queen City. During our previous strolls, we saw the laying of the first rail in Over The Rhine and utility improvements along the 3.6-mile loop.

On our November tour, rail had been laid for several blocks along the route, with the trench now extending up to Liberty Street. New rail is being unloaded every two weeks as route construction ramps up its pace. Crews already encased the first rails in concrete and are laying the granite pavers that made up the cobblestone-looking road outside Music Hall. Electrical and gas line work continues heavily along the line in Over The Rhine, as well as replacement of 300 feet of sewer lines on Elm Street that were leaking due to age.
